Age of Empires III DE: Archipelago

Summary

A map proposal set in an Asian-style environment, playable in both solo and multiplayer skirmish modes. 2 to 4 players.

This map provides an approach that balances terrestrial and naval military strategy. Each player starts on a "medium" island with limited resources in each corner of the map.

Small intermediate islands can offer a slight strategic and economic bonus. However, the largest economic concentration is located on a central big island.

Map Design Description

1.
On the starting island, there is a good amount of wood, allowing for a reserve that can be used to construct buildings and ships.
2.
The available mine is a silver mine with a limit of 2,000 gold units. Therefore, the player is prompted to quickly explore other islands, establish plantations, although space is relatively limited on the island, or even go whale hunting to accumulate gold.
3.
On the island itself, there aren't many natural sources of food; however, the surrounding waters are teeming with fish.
4.
The intermediate islands offer very little construction space but can serve as supply points for a few resources or for establishing defense posts.
5.
Each player has access to two intermediate islands. However, one of them is riskier as it's halfway between two potential players.
6.
The large central island holds the greatest reserve of natural resources. It's the only island with gold mines at 5,000 gold units. However, these mines are surrounded by forests. Players will need to clear this wood using their villagers or carve a path using their artillery.

On this island, a larger quantity of treasures and villages of indigenous nations can be found.

Design Intentions

A.
The cautious approach could involve developing a primary base on the starting island. Then, securing the less risky intermediate island to gradually establish a presence on the large central island. This later becomes a high-intensity combat zone.
B.
Alternatively, the player can challenge their nearest neighbor more quickly by establishing a camp on the second intermediate island before expanding onto the central large island.
C.
The player can also use this intermediate island as a launching point for an invasion of their nearest neighbor's original island. Through clever tactics, they can devise a strategy based on circumnavigating the central island and targeting the starting islands of each of their opponents.
D.
Another option is for the player to directly rush towards the central island and attempt to be the first to establish a foothold there. Then, they can use this island as a launching point against their opponents.
E.
The player can also pursue a rush strategy, attempting to swiftly eliminate their nearest neighbor and hold two starting islands as anchor points. This map offers numerous possible attack angles. The risk-reward tradeoff for each of them differs. Furthermore, this map provides an approach with a convergence of forces and/or multiple fronts simultaneously.
